There are twelve  options in three categories , as per our experience :

1. Start Forward ( also called inside - out thinking )

1.1 Vertical : within  a function

     - top down 

    - bottom up 

1.2 Horizontal : cutting across functions

- customer back 

- shareholder /employee/ supplier/ machine/ material  forward

2. End backwards ( also called outside - in thinking )

2.1 Vertcal : within a function

  - top down

  - bottom up 

2.2 Horizontal : cutting across functions  .

     It  begins with the customer and goes back till the supplier .          

    In more  exhaustive interventions as demanded by intensely competitive situations  ,  

    one has to begin with  "end- customers" and cover till  "supplier's suppliers "

 - customer back 

-  shareholder /employee /supplier /machine /material    forward

3. From one  point to another point 

3.1 Vertical : within a function

  - top down

 - bottom up 

3.2 Horizontal : cutting across functions

- customer back 

- shareholder /employee /supplier /machine /material  forward
