IT based transformation can be costly, difficult to implement, and seen as a cure-all
for issues in the organisation. Often the new system is a major upgrade; therefore
the risks of a failed implementation are significant. The PBO principles allow for
management and mitigation of major risks associated with IT based transformation.

- A thorough understanding of the present situation so that existing problems are
genuinely resolved, and not built-into a new solution - a common major systems transformation
error;
- An intricate design of To-Be processes which reduces rework and general process
inefficiency;
- The use of the To-Be process to guide specification of customised solutions or the
selection of vendors;
- An ability to quantify the benefits of different vendor functions or customised
solution options;
- The capability to understand how much business process change will be required to
deliver a system – with an accompanying understanding of the degree of risk;
- Develop the necessary change plan to deliver the organisational change required
to take full advantage of the new system capabilities.
